The Azure DevOps Playground gives you a dedicated organization and project to explore pipelines, boards, repos, and more. No setup required—jump straight into the DevOps experience.

What Is the Azure DevOps Playground?

Think of the Azure DevOps Playground as a pre-configured DevOps environment where you get your own Azure DevOps organization and project. Experiment with pipelines, agent pools, repositories, and work tracking—all within a safe, isolated session.

Azure DevOps Playground – Features

  • Session Isolation:
    • Each session gets a dedicated DevOps project scoped exclusively to your account.
    • Your resources are isolated from other learners' sessions.
  • Risk-Free Experimentation:
    • Work freely within your project—create pipelines, configure agent pools, set up repos.
    • Changes are scoped to your session and do not affect shared infrastructure.
  • Safe & Secure Space:
    • Sessions are continuously monitored for unusual activity.
    • Project administrator membership is enforced automatically—unauthorized users are removed without warning.

Playground Limits & Restrictions

Agent Pools

  • Max Agent Pools: 2 (per session)
    • Agent pools are tracked by ownership—only pools created under your session identity are counted.
    • System pools (Azure Pipelines, Default) are excluded from the count.
    • Only self-hosted agent pools are permitted; Microsoft-hosted agents are not available in this environment.
      • TIP: Spin up a VM in the allotted playground and register it as your agent.
  • Session Block: If the agent pool count exceeds 2, lab access is temporarily blocked. Contact support if this occurs unexpectedly.

Project Administrators

  • Only the following identities are permitted as Project Administrators:
    • Session user
    • Session service principal
  • Any other user added to the Project Administrators group is automatically removed.
  • This enforcement is continuous—removals happen silently during session monitoring.

While exploring, please keep these restrictions in mind—they govern what you can do within your Azure DevOps Playground session.
