Using dd on virual machines

Hello,

I have some doubts about using dd on virtual machines. In the module Back Up Files to a Remote System (Optional), the instructor says, “you don’t want to run this command (dd) on virtual machines because it will overwrite your virtual disk.” I understand that this command can overwrite any disk, but why is it particularly dangerous with virtual machines?

Best regards,
Piotr

I don’t think there’s any reason specific to virtual systems. dd pointed at the wrong place can trash your disk, is all.
