Don’t run the script as root (sudo). The file should be owned by bob:

I see the same issue with question 6 also, only successfully resolved after changing owner to bob. I am a bit curious, the question didn’t speak about changing owner f(root to bob), am I wrong to say this?

You keep using sudo - it is not required. When you run sudo chmod the user is then root not bob.
