New to DevOps looking for advice

Hello KK Community,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m new to DevOps and have just started the DevOps pathway this week, beginning with the DevOps Prerequisite course. However, I’ve heard from various sources that it can be incredibly challenging to break into the industry as a beginner. I wanted to reach out to this community to ask: Is that truly the case?

I would greatly appreciate any advice on effective learning strategies or resources that could help me maximize my chances of success. My goal is to become a skilled DevOps engineer, and I’m eager to learn from those who have successfully navigated this path.

Additionally, if any of you have inspiring stories or examples of individuals who transitioned from being absolute beginners to becoming proficient in DevOps, I would love to hear them. Drawing inspiration from such stories would be incredibly motivating as I embark on this journey.

Thank you for your support and guidance

People get their starts somehow, but for devops, they don’t start in devops. Most people who end up in devops start by doing development, and move laterally in their companies into a devops role after working for the company for a while.

So it’s a good idea to also have background in development. You’ll need to learn and get skilled in some computer language. python is good for starters; Go is also a good choice to learn early on, as is javascript. Learn about web development – how the web works, including internet networks, databases (SQL and no-SQL). And how to use Linux well.

Oh, so KK is basically for people who are developers that want to transition into a DevOps role rather than total newbies to DevOps. If I understand you correctly your suggesting that its rare for newbies to land a DevOps role upon completing a course with no experience as a dev.

No, we teach devops for everybody, and we include a lot of these basic topics. But to actually get hired in devops, you’ll likely need some development experience. Not because it’s required for devops per se; it’s because the hiring market for devops positions now tends to require broader background than simply devops training.

Ok cool, so as part of my learning journey if I make a real push to incorporate some software development learnings it should stand me in good stead for a Devops career
