The answer to titled question is “Yes”, but I would like to understand how Kiali internally does it? I need a bit further explanation to wrap my head around it to conceptualize it better.

It’s been a while since I did much with Kiali (and it was not in this particular course) but probably the best way to figure this out is to play with kiali a bit. Try the travel tutorial from their tutorials page; I think you’ll see the feature demonstrated.
