I can’t say I’ve used VMWare. I’ve asked my colleagues if they have. You may want to put your question to VMWare customer support.

Are you using VMware Fusion? The process is the same as running any other Linux VM in a Hypervisor. Get up the console of the Linux VM and run;
ip a
This will give you the IP address. Then from your Mac Terminal you can run:
ssh ip
And login.
