Yep - needs read as well as execute permission. This is frequently misunderstood. I explain it here:

It does. You cannot execute that which you cannot read first. Look at it this way. You are in a kitchen which is where you execute a recipe - so you have execute rights by being allowed into in the kitchen. But unless you have first read the recipe, how do you execute it? If the recipe book is in a locked cupboard then your read right is to have the key to the cupboard. A computer program is a recipe. The filesystem is the recipe book. The CPU is the chef.
